When he began working on the music for Disney’s animated film Encanto five years ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda admits he didn’t know all that much about Colombian music. Miranda had to dive headfirst into the project — and ended up creating a cultural blockbuster. 

For the fifth week in a row, the Encanto soundtrack has held steady at the very top of the Billboard 200, where it currently towers over releases like the Weeknd’s Dawn FM and Mitski’s Laurel Hell. It’s been Number One on Spotify’s Global Weekly Top Albums chart since January 27 2022, and in February, it secured an Oscar nod for Best Original Score.

Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto.
