Field Studies is an impressive display of the direction in which the post-rock world can reinvent itself, if it so desires. There are no limitations and both TWDY and Lymbyc Systym demonstrate this with great innovation and skill. Generally speaking, this recording should help hold over fans of This Will Destroy You until their next long player comes as well as help introduce previously unaware listeners to Lymbyc Systym. On the first of two TWDY tracks, a calm layer of strings hides under massive, melody-topped mountains of noise, while subdued Freedom Blade explores pretty guitar interplay. Lymbyc Systym open their half with Processed Spirits, a song that further blurs the line between indie and post-rock thanks to lo-fi 90s influences and poppy keyboard hooks. Notations, the strongest song on the split, showcases drummer Mike Bell’s intricate and bustling beats. No wonder they impressed Justin Peroff and the rest of the Broken Social Scene crew.
